Presented by 1a space, the Jockey Club Contemporary Art Literacy and Appreciation Programme is a 3-year art education initiative. With the support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Programme aims to provide a holistic docent training programme, docent-led public tours, a series of public talks and seminars, workshops and art experiences and an online learning platform to popularize the knowledge of contemporary art appreciation in Hong Kong.
In this era where “every human being is an artist”, we believe that contemporary art is open to interpretation, and everyone can share with others their own ways of seeing. With proper guidance and training, “everyone can be a docent”.
With the purpose of widening the audience base and further enriching contemporary art development in Hong Kong, the Programme aims at equipping docents with the ability to not just showing people around and provides context, but also be able to share their unique narration that would spark new ideas and insights.
1a space, founded in 1998, is an independent, non-profit making contemporary visual art organization and art venue founded by a collective of Hong Kong artworkers.
It moved from its original location, an old government warehouse at Oil Street, North Point, to the current location at Cattle Depot in 2002. 1a space aims to promote the making, experimentation, exchange and dissemination of contemporary art both in Hong Kong and in the international arena.
Over nearly two decades, 1a space has developed into one of Hong Kong’s leading contemporary art organizations. It has produced more than 160 exhibitions and activities, and has been active in international exchanges, cultural festivals, participatory community art, as well as art education and publication.
